Why Barcelona don’t have to form a Guard of honour for Real Madrid

The two sides meet in El Clasico this week at the Bernabeu in Real’s first game back since winning the Club World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick earned his side a 1-0 win over Gremio to seal Real’s third FIFA Club World Cup since 2014, equalling the record of Barcelona.

It also secured a fifth trophy in the calendar year following success in La  Liga, the Champions League, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo and others are asking for guard of honour by F.C Barcelona according to Rule.

Barca chiefs held talks over whether they would pay tribute to Real before their crunch La Liga clash.

But they have decided not to and Luis Suarez has explained just why.

He told RAC1: “That guard of honour is a new thing for me since arriving in Spain.

“I know it is said that in the rules if you are also in that competition which your opponent won, then you do it as a sign of respect.

“But on this occasion, we had nothing to do with the Club World Cup so we don’t have to do it. That’s the decision the club made.”

Barcelona approach the game in good form having beaten Deportivo 4-0 top open up an 11-point gap on their rivals.

Suarez added: “We’re in good form so hopefully we can win. We are confident and playing well offensively and defensively.

“We all want to win and if we do, it is a giant step for us and would give us a big lead over Real Madrid.

“However, we have other rivals but it would be a psychological blow.

“It wouldn’t win us La Liga but would give us a nice cushion for the second round.”

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane challenged his side to achieve even more this season after retaining their title in Abu Dhabi.

“It is a great moment for all Madridistas and everyone who loves this club. There have been some great brilliant moments and we are witnessing them first hand,” Zidane said.

“We have to enjoy today, the balance is good and we must continue in this manner. We are going home to relax, and then turn our attentions to El Clasico.

“We have won our fifth (trophy) this year and we will keep on. Now we must enjoy, rest up and think about the rest of the season.”
